Overview

We are seeking a dynamic and experienced Technical Accounting & Claims Manager to join our team as Regional Technical Account & Claims Manager in Botswana. This role is pivotal in overseeing both technical premium processing and claims management functions, ensuring strict compliance with Continental Reinsurance’s operational guidelines.

The successful candidate will play a dual role, managing the technical accuracy of reinsurance accounting data (including premiums, commissions, and reconciliations) and overseeing the timely and accurate administration of claims. The individual will work closely with Underwriting, Credit Control, Business Development, Compliance and Legal, Finance and Group-level technical functions to ensure complete financial data integrity and robust client servicing.

Key Responsibilities

Technical Accounting Responsibilities

  • Ensure all policy data and technical accounts submitted by clients comply with treaty terms and conditions and meet internal service standards.
  • Maintain the accuracy of premium information across all contracts, including endorsements, premium adjustments, reinstatements, and cash allocations.
  • Review and confirm all technical adjustments such as profit commission, sliding scale commission, commission adjustments, and reinstatement premiums before booking.
  • Ensure technical data is accurately processed through SICs and aligned with financial reporting deadlines.
  • Reconcile booked vs. estimated premiums quarterly and support the accurate preparation of financial statements.
  • Collaborate with underwriting, credit control, and business development to support premium collections and application initiatives.
  • Provide input to the Group Technical Services Head on process alignment and system efficiency across regional operations.
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives and internal control enhancements for technical reporting and reconciliation processes.

Claims Management Responsibilities

  • Manage the full lifecycle of treaty and facultative claims processing, including registration, validation, review, and settlement.
  • Ensure accurate and timely claims booking in line with policy conditions and regulatory standards.
  • Validate supporting documentation and coordinate with underwriting, legal, and finance teams for complex claims.
  • Handle reinsurance recoveries and work closely with cedants to resolve outstanding claims or documentation.
  • Monitor and analyze claims trends and prepare regular claims reports and loss analysis insights for senior management.
  • Enhance operational claims controls, accuracy in data capture, and process consistency across business units.
  • Liaise with internal stakeholders to assess claims impacts on treaty profitability and performance.

Client Servicing & Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Maintain professional relationships with clients, brokers, and other external stakeholders, providing timely and detailed feedback on accounting and claims queries.
  • Support client engagement efforts by providing technical insight on premium and claims data, trends, and process flow.
  • Coordinate with business development teams during client negotiations and presentations, offering technical validation of contracts.
  • Serve as a key point of contact for client-specific queries, reconciliations, and escalations relating to technical accounting and claims matters.

Qualifications & Professional Experience

  • Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree (2:2 or higher) in a numerate field such as Mathematics, Statistics, Economics, Accounting, or Finance.
  • Professional qualification (CII, IISA, etc) will be an added advantage.
  • At least 10 years of solid experience in Technical Accounts within a Reinsurance Company or in a Reinsurance/Claims Department of an Insurance Company.
  • Strong understanding of reinsurance premium processing (treaty and facultative) and claims handling principles.
  • Experience with technical processing tools, especially SICs (System for Insurance Contracts).
  • Knowledge of Non-Proportional and Proportional Treaty business and facultative reinsurance structures.
  • Experience with ceded reinsurance accounting and claims recovery.
  • Working knowledge of tax-related aspects of reinsurance accounting is an added advantage.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office tools (Excel – Intermediate, Word, Outlook).
  • High level of accuracy in data entry, excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong communication and stakeholder management abilities—both internal and external.
